Serving our community

Kiwanis ® is a service organization above all else. One of the tennants of Kiwanis is, "To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life" .  Our club in Pinellas Park adopts projects each year to meet the needs of our local, national, and international community. Club members participate in committees to coordinate and contribute to service opportunities. Below are a few of the ways we're working to make our community better.

Sponsored Clubs

Aktion Club

Aktion Club at PARC, St. Petersburg is one of our club's long-standing projects. The theme of Aktion club is, "where development has no disability." Aktion Club began as a Florida project in the seventies. Adopted as an International project in 2000, Aktion clubs now serve adults in many areas.

Adults from PARC, an agency serving adults with disabilities in St. Petersburg, form the club. They are building service and leadership skills. Members from the Pinellas Park club work alongside PARC staff to encourage these fellow Kiwanians. Throughout the year, our club sponsors holiday parties and special events for the people at PARC.

Horses for the Handicapped - Our division sponsors this event each Saturday from January through May.  Handicapped children ride horses accompanied by four Kiwanians who help balance them on the horse.  Every member of our district is invited to attend to assist the riders.

Fishing Derby - Each year our club sponsors a fishing derby which is open to the children of the community. The event takes place at Freedom Lake Park and will be June 6th in 2009.

CHRISTMAS PARADE - Each year our club sponsors the Santa float in the Christmas Parade. Club members are invited to ride the float and throw beads to the spectators.

TREAT TRAILOur club joins other members of the community at the England Brothers Bandshell on Halloween to hand out safe treats to children. Each member is encouraged to bring candy or donate money to buy treats.

Elementary School Reading – Our club has a reading program at Pinellas Park Elementary that takes place during the school year.  On a weekly basis, members of the club read books to first and second graders.
